Twelve Thirty at 6:15pm
and
Flannel Pajamas at 9pm

Scene Photo A maverick figure of American independent cinema, Jeff Lipsky began his career as an associate of John Cassavetes, before becoming sales manager for New Yorker Films and co-founding distributor October Films. In the last 15 years, he has moved into directing, creating a series of highly original relationship movies marked by their uninhibited performances, smart dialogue and uncommon sexual frankness.

Sneak Preview! Q&A with director Jeff Lipsky and actors Reed Birney, Portia Reiners, and Karen Young.

Jeff (Glee star Jonathan Groff), is a 21st-century Benjamin Braddock whose lusty affection for his former high-school crush Mel (terrific newcomer Portia Reiners) brings him a bit too closely into Mel’s dysfunctional Cedar Rapids family, comprised of her virginal older sister Maura (Mamie Gummer), agoraphobic mother (Karen Young) and estranged bisexual father (Reed Birney). What follows is a one-of-a-kind coming-of-age story, spiked with perversity, caustic wit and hard-won insight into the timeless battle of the sexes.

“Truly and exceptionally fine, a spiny and dispassionate little masterpiece of a marriage movie.” —Andrew O’Hehir, Salon.com

Q&A with director Jeff Lipsky and actors Jamie Harrold, Julianne Nicholson, and Rebecca Shull.

A Broadway publicist (Weeds’ Justin Kirk) and a debt-addled Minnesota farm girl (Julianne Nicholson) meet on a blind date, move in together, and eventually tie the knot in writer-director Lipsky’s bracingly candid, semi-autobiographical portrait of modern relationships. She wants kids; he doesn’t, at least not right away. She accuses him of being cool to her family and friends, and she may be right. He tells her she can’t get a dog, then says she can, but only if she stops talking about having a kid. Propelled by powerhouse performances and crackling dialogue, this warts-and-all take on “happily ever after” is an unfairly overlooked gem among recent American indies.
