Scene Photo Ride Tonight!
Rid i natt
Gustaf Molander, 1942; 108m
Although Sweden remained neutral throughout World War II, reports of German brutality in neighboring Denmark and Norway as well as across Europe quickly turned popular opinion against the Germans. A parable of popular resistance against totalitarian authorities, Ride Tonight! powerfully captured the country’s growing anti-Nazi sentiments. The story is set after the Thirty Years’ War, when many foreign nobles stayed in Sweden and set up what amounted to their own fiefdoms. A farmer forced off his land escapes to the hills, where he meets others similarly punished by the foreigners; banding together, these “outlaws” fight for national sovereignty and for the return of what once were their lands. There’s a rousing ending seemingly designed to goad the spectators into some kind of action.
