Scene Photo Welcome
Philippe Lioret, 2009; 110m
Actor Vincent Lindon in person on March 14!

A young Iraqi Kurd, Bilal, travels across Europe in the hope of eventually catching up with his girlfriend. The trail leads to the U.K., where her disapproving family has moved; arriving at the port city of Calais, Bilal tries different ways to cross the Channel, but finally decides the only way to do it is to swim the 21 miles. To that end, he enlists the aid of Simon (Vincent Lindon), a swimming coach who finds himself increasingly drawn into the young man’s story. Winner of numerous international awards, and nominated for a slew of French Cesar awards (including Best Actor for Vincent Lindon), Welcome became one of the biggest box-office hits in France. Although a number of films have treated the theme of illegal immigration, few have done so with the humanity of Welcome. Director Philippe Lioret adds a stirring complexity to all the relationships here, resulting in both an engaging drama and an incisive portrait of an important social issue.

A Conversation with Vincent Lindon
Acclaimed actor Vincent Lindon returns to Rendez-Vous with two wonderful performances in two wonderful films, Welcome and Mademoiselle Chambon. In conversation with Film Society Program Director Richard Peña, he will discuss his career as well as his thoughts on the art of the cinema and the art of the actor.
