and
ImageNation Revolution Awards
Thursday, December 2 at 7pm

The screening of Stanley Nelson’s Freedom Riders will be preceded by the ImageNation Revolution Awards. Jamie Hector of Night Catches Us and The Wire will host the awards ceremony which includes a musical performance by Jermaine Paul, featured musician on Alicia Key’s Diary. Nelson’s documentary is the powerful, harrowing and ultimately inspirational story of eight months that changed America forever. A discussion with civil rights hero and Georgia Congressman John Lewis and director Stanley Nelson will follow the screening. Co-presented by ImageNation Cinema Foundation. Sponsored by BET Networks.

Scene Photo Freedom Riders
Stanley Nelson, 2009, USA; 113m
From May until December 1961, more that 400 black and white Americans risked their lives to travel together on buses through the Deep South. Deliberately violating the Jim Crow laws, the Freedom Riders’ belief in non-violent activism was sorely tested as mob violence and bitter racism greeted them along the way. Featuring testimony from the Riders themselves, state and federal government officials, and journalists who witnessed the rides firsthand.

ImageNation Revolution Awards
This year's ImageNation Revolution honorees include actress and activist Ruby Dee; civil rights hero Georgia Congressman John Lewis; Chair and CEO of BET Networks, Debra L. Lee; Lisa Cortes, Executive Producer of the Academy Award winning film Precious; Tom Burrell, Chair Emeritus of Burrell Communications and author of Brainwashed; and activist Iris Morales. ImageNation's Revolution Awards are presented to individuals who inspire social change, blaze new trails, help foster solidarity throughout the African Diaspora, and promote and advance the arts including Black and Latino film and culture. These awards are presented to individuals who have shown courage and lifelong commitment, recognizing the impact that revolutionary deeds have on the arts, which mirror, reflect and shape our society.

ImageNation Cinema Foundation is a Harlem-based media arts organization, founded with the goal of establishing a chain of art-house cinemas, dedicated to progressive media by and about people of color. Through a variety of public exhibitions and programs, ImageNation fosters media equity, media literacy, solidarity, cross-cultural exchange and highlights the humanity of Pan-African people worldwide.
