The Little Prince
Stanley Donen, 1974, UK/USA; 88m
The charming fanciful musical adapts the much-beloved classic by Saint-Exupéry and boasts a soundtrack by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe (the tandem responsible for My Fair Lady). A crash-landed French aviator (Richard Kiley) meets the titular boy prince (played with otherworldly adorableness by Steven Warner), hailing from the lonely Asteroid B-612. The prince recounts his marvelous encounters with a talking fox (Gene Wilder) and a dancing snake (frequent Donen collaborator Bob Fosse, whose performance closely anticipates Michael Jackson’s choreography in the “Billie Jean” music video).
