The One, the Only Stanley Donen
November 3 – 10

Stanley Donen in person and in conversation with Mike Nichols (on Nov 3rd), Scott Foundas (on Nov 4th), and Kent Jones (on Nov 6th)!

Scene Photo One of the most versatile craftsmen to emerge from Hollywood’s Golden Age, Oscar-winner Stanley Donen began his career as a teenage dancer on Broadway and, by his 21st birthday, was already on contract to MGM. There, as a choreographer and later as a director, he contributed to some of the most celebrated musical sequences ever put on film, from Gene Kelly’s dance with Jerry the Mouse in Anchors Aweigh to Singin’ in the Rain’s watery ballet. But if Donen was indisputably, in the words of Jean-Luc Godard, “the master (major or minor) of the musical,” he was no less adept at comedy, suspense, drama and romance, able to adapt his visual flair and deft touch with actors for seemingly any occasion. We are delighted to welcome Stanley Donen to the Film Society for this career-spanning, in-person tribute!

Thanks to: Kent Jones, Mike Nichols, Haden Guest/Harvard Film Archive, Barry Allen and Kathryn Brennan/Paramount Pictures, Mark McElhatten/Sikelia Productions, Justin Rautenbach and Michael Schlesinger/Sony Pictures Repertory, Caitlin Robertson and Schawn Belston/20th Century Fox, Marilee Womack/Warner Brothers.
