Wham! Bam! Islam!
Special Sneak Peek
Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 8pm
In 2003, Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa, a clinical psychologist, graduate of Columbia Business School, and writer of children’s books, had an idea: a comic book with roots in Islam and Islamic culture. The result: The 99, a team of superheroes who each exemplify one of the 99 attributes of Allah. The first issue hit stands during Ramadan 2006. A great success, it was immediately condemned by Islam’s cultural gatekeepers, and Dr. Al-Mutawa faced a familiar problem: How much of his original vision should he sacrifice to make his idea profitable?
In this fascinating look at changing definitions of the sacred and the secular across the Islamic world, Isaac Solotaroff follows the continuing saga of The 99. He will join us to present this cut of the film as a work-in-progress. Dr. Al-Mutawa may also attend. Copies of the magazine will be available, and look for an animated feature film based on The 99 later this year.
