With a Little Help from Myself / Aide-toi, le ciel t’aidera Series: Rendez-Vous with French Cinema [2009] Director: François Dupeyron, Country: France, Release: 2008, Runtime: 94 Sonia (Félicité Wouassi), an African immigrant struggling to get by in a Paris housing project, discovers that her ne’er-do-well husband has suffered a fatal heart attack on the day of her daughter’s wedding. Not wanting to ruin the celebration, she asks her elderly white neighbor Robert (Claude Rich) to hold onto the cadaver for a few hours. He proposes that they bury the body themselves, to keep receiving the dead man’s pension. Thus begins an unlikely relationship between two of contemporary France’s most marginalized groups, immigrants and the elderly. A dark and pointed social satire, François Dupeyron’s new film includes a detailed look at life in the projects. Wouassi, winner of the Best Actress Award at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival, is a major discovery who makes Sonia a woman of seemingly boundless energy and spirit, facing each new challenge thrown her way with a simple “we’ll find a solution.”
