Mesrine Part 1
Series: Rendez-Vous with French Cinema [2009]
Director: Jean-François Richet, Country: France/Canada/Italy; Release: 2008, Runtime: 113

The life and adventures of Jacques Mesrine, post-war France’s most notorious criminal, have been referenced in dozens of films. Jean-François Richet, aided by a sensational performance by Vincent Cassel, has brought the enigmatic Mesrine into a vivid spotlight. Part one begins in the ’60s after Mesrine’s stint in the Army during the Algerian War, when he falls in with some petty mobsters led by Guido (Gérard Depardieu). He quickly moves up the ranks and is soon masterminding his own jobs. After an extended stay in Spain during which he starts a family, he returns to Paris and hooks up with the ruthless and cold-blooded Jeanne Schneider (Cécile de France), who pushes Mesrine into ever more risky schemes.

Based on Mesrine’s writings completed during one of his many stints in prison, the film neither defends nor romanticizes the infamous gangster. Richet vibrantly relays his extraordinary whirlwind of a life, perched always on the edge of death while (almost) managing to find some escape.

A Senator Entertainment release.
