Cabin in the Sky Series: Oscar Micheaux [2009] Director: Vincente Minnelli, Country: USA, Release: 1943, Runtime: 98 Hollywood wasn’t completely blind (nor deaf) to its pool of extraordinary African-American performers and occasionally would embark on its own, much bigger-budget versions of other people’s race films. Based on the popular stage show by Lynn Root, Vincente Minnelli’s debut feature tells the story of gambler Little Joe (Eddie “Rochester” Anderson) and his wife Petunia (Ethel Waters), whose prayers for him attract the attention of both heavenly and diabolic forces. The film’s music includes performances by Louis Armstrong and a wonderful rendition of “Honey in the Honeycomb” by a sultry Lena Horne.
