With a personal, commanding, detached charisma and effortless organic connection with follow actors, Steve McQueen beamed off the movie screen with the intensity of a high-powered searchlight in the Los Angeles night sky. Yet he rarely participated in the cliché Hollywood celebrity scene of his day, choosing instead to spend time with stunt men and below-the-line crew members--the industry people with whom he felt most comfortable--and focusing on the main priorities of his life: first wife Neile Adams, children Chad and Terry, fast cars, motorcycles, and martial arts (he served as a pallbearer at Bruce Lee’s funeral). With keen business sense, hard-as-nails instincts, and extraordinary popularity both in the States and overseas, he became the highest-paid actor in Hollywood and worked with some of the most talented directors mainstream American cinema has ever offered: Norman Jewison, Robert Mulligan, Sam Peckinpah, Franklin J. Schaffner, John Sturges, Robert Wise, and Peter Yates.
