David Fincher, USA, 2008; 180m
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s clever, arch short story about a man born old who grows physically younger has been moved from Baltimore to New Orleans, pushed ahead 50 years and expanded into a 20th century epic. It has also been re-fashioned by Fincher and screenwriter Eric Roth into a quietly heartbreaking meditation on time and aging. The younger Benjamin (Brad Pitt) gets, the older he becomes. Somewhere between his rowdy New Orleans youth, his years as a sailor, his settled life as the heir of a button factory and his itinerant “childhood,” he finds a brief, golden interval with the woman he loves (Cate Blanchett). Fincher’s craft here is remarkable. The technical wizardry of the director and his team is strictly at the service of the storytelling, and as Dave Kehr wrote in The New York Times, the use of computer-generated imagery is “so deft and so sophisticated that, after a few minutes, it no longer seems remarkable.” In a film with so many lasting images and moments, the most moving are of Benjamin himself, as he contemplates the passing of time through his own peculiar looking glass.
