  City Lights
Charles Chaplin, USA, 1931; 87m

Scene Photo The Little Tramp’s run-in with a beautiful blind woman coincides with his multiple rescues of a heavy-drinking millionaire, opening the way for the Tramp to pay to restore the girl’s sight. City Lights was well into production when the sound revolution overtook Hollywood. Chaplin boldly chose to soldier on with his “comedy in pantomime” as written, ultimately creating some of his most celebrated pratfalls and comic episodes. Rated among the best films of any era, City Lights is rumored to have been Orson Welles’s all-time favorite movie.

Modern Times
Charles Chaplin, USA, 1936; 87m

Scene PhotoChaplin’s final silent was this breathless satire on the industrial age and the omniscient forces directing American progress. A factory worker—already driven mad by the assembly line and mistaken for a Communist agitator—befriends an orphan and joins her in facing the uncertainty of the modern future with a smile. Though (or perhaps, because) it’s counted among the films that later drew the ire of the House Un-American Activities Committee and forced Chaplin into exile, Modern Times is a celebrated pinnacle of his style, with the Automated Feeding Machine sequence a particular masterpiece.
