“Are you goin' to let me have a good time in my own quiet way, or must I take this place apart?”

The Docks of New York
Golden Silents
Friday, November 21, 2008 at 7pm
Donald Sosin and Joanna Seaton perform live on stage for Sternberg’s waterfront romance. After the screening, there will be a Meet the Artists Reception in the Furman Gallery with complimentary beer, wine, soft drinks and hor d’oeuvres.

The Docks of New York is one of the finest studies of black and white photography in the history of the cinema and one of the most poignant love stories. Betty Compson is a down-and-out woman saved from a waterfront suicide by the reluctant stoker George Bancroft. Nowhere, not even in the best Dietrich films, is Sternberg in better command of dramatic tempo, alternating action with nearly motionless tableaus cut through with conflicting emotions. The ending is magical to the point of mythology, held to earth only by the poetic vernacular of ordinary people. Jean George Auriel, 1929: ‘Not for an instant in this story are the rules of established morality taken into account: those who inhabit it are commanded only by the heart, pride and a sense of personal dignity.’”—Janet Bergstrom, Il Cinema Ritrovato, Bologna, 2008

Tickets: $12 members/students; $13 seniors (62+);$15 public.

Pianist Donald Sosin has been accompanying silents in New York City for 35 years. He and his wife, singer Joanna Seaton, have performed at numerous film festivals, including New York, Telluride, Seattle and San Francisco. Visit their website: oldmoviemusic.com.
