Fresh off their great success with Infernal Affairs, Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, together with screenwriter Felix Chong, took over the reins of Initial D after director Tsui Hark left over “creative differences.” Based on the popular Japanese manga, the film is the story of Takumi (pop star Jay Chou, before Curse of the Golden Flower), a gas station attendant who lives with his down-on-his-luck dad Bunta (the wonderful Anthony Wong). To support the family Bunta makes tofu that Takumi delivers in his free time. Learning to navigate his local roads’ hairpin turns and treacherous mountain paths, Takumi develops the skills to become a first-class street racer. Encouraged by his father, himself a former racecar driver, and his friends, Takumi enters a major race that will include local bully Takeshi, as well as professional drivers. In much the same way that Infernal Affairs plunged the viewer into the criminal underworld and an underground police unit, Initial D brings the world of street racing to life, with several heart-stopping driving sequences featuring an amazingly sophisticated use of CGI to put you right into the driver’s seat.
