Going Home / San Geng (Director’s Cut)
Series: 10 Years and Running: Recent Hong Kong Cinema
Director: Peter Chan, Country: Hong Kong, Release: 2002, Runtime: 61

Originally released as part of a pan-Asian trilogy aptly titled “Three,” the extended version of Going Home later received its own, separate release and was nominated for several Hong Kong film awards in 2003. A widowed policeman, Chan (Eric Tsang), moves with his young son Cheung into a huge, anonymous apartment complex slated to be demolished in the near future. Most of the tenants have already moved out, but soon after moving in, Chan and Cheung discover a little girl in a red coat wandering around the hallways. A few days later, Chan comes home from work and discovers that Cheung in missing. When he goes to the girl’s apartment to inquire after his son, he’s told that the tenants don’t have children. An eerie, unsettling tale is thus set in motion that infuses elements of horror with a psychological thriller. Beautifully shot by Christopher Doyle, the underlying motifs of Going Home seem to be the fear of transience –– the way so little in Hong Kong life could be called fixed or permanent –– and one character’s desperate attempt to achieve powers of preservation well beyond normal life.
