The time for the regular succession of the mob's leader is at hand, and two candidates step forward: Big D (Tony Leung Ka-fai), large-living, flamboyant, with a quick-smile and even quicker temper; and Lok (Simon Yam), less flashy, more slow and methodical but, as we soon learn, every bit as ruthless as the competition. Big D does his best to flatter and even bribe the "uncles" (older mobsters), whose votes are crucial, and just when it looks as if the post is his, the tide unexpectedly shifts. Much of the action revolves around a special wooden baton coming from the mainland, a centuries - old symbol of authority whose evocation of some traditional order cannot hide the horrifying lengths these men will go to possess it. Johnnie To here is in absolutely top form, navigating an impressively large cast of characters through a hidden world with its own rules, ethics and even morals.
