Golden Silents: Way Down East
Friday, July 20, 7:00 pm

Admission: $20 for the public; $15 for members, students with a current ID.

This print of Way Down East, lovingly restored by MoMA, fills in many missing plot points and intertitles. It played to capacity crowds at the 2006 Pordenone Festival, which commissioned a new score from Donald Sosin and Joanna Seaton that combines original themes with American and English folk songs, hymns and dances. The couple performs frequently around New York and at major film festivals here and abroad, and teaches workshops for high school and college students in silent film music.

Way Down East
D.W. Griffith, US, 1920; 145m
Adapted from a popular stage play, Way Down East follows the melodramatic saga of Anna (the stunning Lillian Gish) as she is wooed and cast off by city slicker Lowell Sherman, then rescued by gentle Richard Barthelmess. D.W. Griffith, heavily in debt by 1919, was not helped by a long production time––waiting for New England summer to give way to the wintry climate required for the film’s climactic blizzard and chase over a frozen river that still keeps audiences edgy fourscore and seven years later. Luckily for the famed director, the film was tremendously successful, and while New York critics condescended somewhat to this "simple story of plain folks," they acknowledged its storytelling power. It became one of the top-grossing silent films of the 1920s.

The Golden Silents program at the Walter Reade Theater is made possible through the generosity of the Ira M. Resnick Foundation.
