Program 14: Dido and Aeneas, A Danced Opera Series: Dance on Camera Festival [2007] Director: Barbara Willis Sweete, Country: Canada, Release: 1995, Runtime: 55 This adaptation of the critically acclaimed and provocative dance production by Mark Morris takes a fresh and controversial approach to the Baroque operatic masterwork written in 1689 by Henry Purcell. In the original stage production, as in this filmed adaptation, Mark Morris himself stars in the dual roles of Dido and the Sorceress, with Guillermo Resto as Aeneas. Filmmaker Sweete is one of the preeminent directors of music and dance films and has worked, in addition to Morris, with James Kudelka and Lar Lubovitch, as well as opera stars Kiri te Kanawa, and Renee Fleming and musicians Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax. Followed by an onstage discussion with Barbara Willis Sweete and Mark Morris, moderated by The New Yorker's dance critic Joan Acocella.
