Golden Silents: Battling Butler
Screening with: Felix the Cat in Sure-Locked Homes
With live accompaniment by The BQE Project
Friday, November 30, 2007 at 7pm

Admission: $10 children (ages 6 - 12; must be accompanied by an adult); $15 Film Society members & students; $20 general public

Born-showman Buster Keaton directs and stars in the 1926 classic silent Battling Butler, produced by Joseph M. Schenck and shot in part by pioneer cinematographer and special effects artist Devereaux Jennings. It became the greatest box office success of Buster Keaton’s independent comedies –– and also his personal favorite!

We're also screening Sure-Locked Homes (US, 1928; 8m) starring legendary animator Otto Messmer’s most famous creation and the world’s second oldest animated film character: Felix the Cat.

The BQE Project, under the direction of musical director and composer Tom Nazziola, will accompany both films. The BQE Project is an acoustic chamber ensemble that has quickly developed a loyal following for its original music scores and live performances to both silent and sound film. The ensemble performs regularly at film festivals and theaters throughout the country.

Battling Butler
Buster Keaton, US, 1926; 71m
Alfred Butler is a fragile young man whose father sends him to the country to mature and blossom. During his journey, Butler meets and falls in love with a country girl (Sally O’Neal), who mistakes him for a prizefighter of the same name. To win her love, he poses as the lightweight champion and steps into the ring to train.

The Golden Silents program is made possible through the generosity of the Ira M. Resnick Foundation.
