Set in 1960, Crossing the Border is the story of Martín (played by director Carlos Iglesias), who, together with his friend Marcos, leaves Spain to try his luck in Switzerland. They arrive in an almost impossibly picturesque Swiss town and are quickly confronted by what for them are the mysterious habits of the locals. Just as they seem to be settling in, their families arrive — Martín’s wife and son, and Marcos’s fiancée — and the process of assimilation begins all over again.
Immigration abroad for work played a major role in Spanish life in the 50s and 60s, yet until recently the subject has rarely been addressed in Spanish cinema. The feature-film debut of television comedian Carlos Iglesias is a touching look with powerful contemporary resonance at one family’s attempt to create a new life for itself on very foreign soil.
