Kimberly Reed’s award-winning debut documentary is a raw and provocative examination of one family’s struggle to come to terms with its past and present, and marks a coming-out in more ways than one for the transgender filmmaker.
Director Kimberly Reed will introduce the film and answer questions after the screening. A reception will follow the event.
Returning home to a small town in Montana for her high school reunion, filmmaker Kimberly Reed hopes for reconciliation with her long-estranged adopted brother, Marc. But along the way she uncovers stunning revelations, including his blood relationship with Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth, intense sibling rivalries and unforeseeable twists of plot and gender that forces them to face challenges no one could imagine. Prodigal Sons is her first feature-length documentary film, and marks her coming-out, in more ways than one.
After studying cinema at UC Berkeley and San Francisco State University, Kimberly Reed was looking forward to a promising career as a filmmaker. But then she transitioned genders and did what transsexuals are encouraged to do: She disappeared. Sequestering herself in the world of publishing, but using her filmmaking knowledge, she worked as a magazine editor while establishing a reputation as a digital filmmaking expert. Kimberly Reed is already recognized as the first transgender feature filmmaker, and she was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film. She will be present to introduce the film and for a Q&A after the screening, followed by a reception in the Furman Gallery.
