INDEPENDENTS NIGHT

The Last Survivor
Thursday, August 12: 6:30pm
Tickets On Sale Now!

Filmmakers Michael Pertnoy and Michael Kleiman spent three years traveling the world, documenting the lives of genocide survivors and their stories of strength and hope. The resulting film, The Last Survivor, is an award-winning documentary that weaves together a powerful tale of four unforgettable individuals who struggle to make sense of tragedy while raising awareness of ongoing human atrocities.

The film follows: Hedi Fried, liberated from Bergen Belsen, Jacqueline Murekatete, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide, Adam Bashar, a survivor of the Darfur genocide who now lives in Tel Aviv, and Justin Semahoro Kimenyerwa, who fled the Congo amidst horrific violence in 1996. Embedded in each of their stories is the will to survive and the determination to share their experiences with the rest of the world in an effort to ensure these tragedies do not befall others. Their ability to continue their lives and their willingness to put themselves on the line to bring to light the continuing global pain of genocide provides an opportunity for us to consider how we might collectively act in the face of similar issues today.

The Last Survivor
2010, USA; 88m
Directors: Michael Pertnoy & Michael Kleiman
Producers: Samuel Goldberg, Thomas Sweeney & Jeff Scheftel

Hédi Fried was born in a small Transylvanian town. In 1944, she was sent to Auschwitz where most of her family was killed. After being liberated from Bergen Belsen the following year, she found her way to Sweden, where she lives still, working as a psychologist, educator, and author.

Jacqueline Murekatete was nine years old when she lost her family in the Rwandan genocide. Now, an NYU alum, she is a law student at Cordozo University in New York City and is the founder of Jacqueline's Human Rights Corner, an organization that teaches genocide prevention to students around the world and supports survivors of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

In 1996, Justin Semahoro Kimenyerwa’s village in the Congo was attacked in the middle of the night. Separated from his family, he fled to Burundi, Rwanda and Nairobi before being resettled in St. Louis. He currently works as a translator for refugees at St. Barnes Jewish hospital and speaks to community groups about his experience as a refugee.

Adam Bashar is a survivor of the genocide in Darfur who lives in Tel Aviv, Israel. Now 21, he serves as a liaison between the city’s education department and more than 300 Darfur student-refugees who live there. He also studies Political Science at IDC Herzliya's International school and is president of Bnai Darfur, a humanitarian organization that works with Sudanese refugees in Israel.
