Film Comment Selects Presents 1991: The Year Punk Broke Monday, May 4, 2009 at 8:15pm Featuring live tunes by Sonic Youth Nirvana Dinosaur Jr. Ramones Gumball Babes in Toyland Stay for the after-party! Music provided by Viva Radio. Dust off yr fuzz pedal! Dave Markey’s Super-8 tour diary leaves no alternative rock unturned to follow Sonic Youth and openers Nirvana (yes, openers) on a two-week jaunt through Northern Europe. Shot weeks before Nevermind knocked Michael Jackson off the charts, 1991: The Year Punk Broke is, almost 20 years later, a grainy snapshot of the last days of a scene and a vanishing moment for avid, unwashed rockers on the verge. Markey’s ribald document is filled to the brim with memories: Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon face painting Kurt Cobain, Nirvana’s Dave Grohl yucking it up at the craft services table, an audience member OD-ing on too much “Kool Thing” and being carried out on a stretcher. All this and Courtney Love too! And let’s not forget the knock-yr-sox-off performances. Nirvana is manic on “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and plaintive with “Poppy.” The Ramones go hardcore “Commando.” Gumball assaults us with sheer psychedelia, and SY are at the height of their powers, tearing through “Schizophrenia,” “Teenage Riot” and others, with Lee Ranaldo playing his Les Paul with a screwdriver.
